It seems like a lifetime ago since I qualified from Guy’s Hospital, London in 1989. Since then, I’ve continued to broaden both my skills and qualifications as a dental surgeon, primarily specialising in Prosthodontics, which is the rebuilding of damaged teeth and the replacement of missing teeth. My main role is to give an overview of treatments for patients with more complicated dental problems. But, I also like to work as a general dentist.
My working career began in 1990, when I was appointed House Officer in Prosthodontics at Guy’s Hospital. From that point onwards, I began to develop my skills in dental surgery at a range of hospitals across England. In 1993, I passed the primary fellowship examination at the Royal College of Surgeons and then moved to Texas. I obtained a Masters in Science and a Certificate in Advanced Prosthodontics from the University of Texas, where I also spent three years as a resident and part-time teacher. During this time, I was granted a Membership in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons and I was also admitted to the Specialist Register (UK) as a Prosthodontist.
Three years later, I returned to Blighty and started working for Guy’s Hospital again – this time as a Clinical Demonstrator. I then started working for a Harley Street practice (where I still work to this day), before co-founding Specialist Dental Partners in 2004.
I chose dentistry for three main reasons: I wanted to work as a clinician in healthcare, I wanted to help people, and I was interested in engineering. Although I’ve continued to work, lecture, present and teach at an international level, my commitment has always been to making a real difference to an individual’s sense of well-being. It’s incredibly satisfying to see a patient’s whole demeanour improve as a result of having healthy, beautiful teeth.
Over the last two years, I’ve been working hard on a technology project focusing on enhancing wound healing after trauma and surgery.
Life beyond work? I love to swim regularly... and surf when I get the chance. I feel very much at home in the ocean having grown up in Southern California. I also love to ride my motorbike (currently a BMW R1150 GS). I have three wonderful children, who are just great (and I promised not to embarrass them – so that’s it!).
I love food. I love life. I love my family. I love my work (not necessarily in that order!).
